It was a great thrill to be invited to help celebrate Baldessin Studio’s 25th Anniversary celebrations this year. Baldessin has been a wonderful place to learn about the photogravure process of printing and for me it has been a revelation. I have had many residencies there since 2016 with mentorship and encouragement from Silvi Glattaeur. She introduced me to this form of printing during the 2015 Ballarat International Foto Biennale when I attended her workshop and my interest has continued to grow since then.
What I love about the technique is the more hands-on technique which is required to make each print. It takes me around 50 minutes from the time I first roll the ink onto my photogravure plate to the time that I lift the print from the bed of the press. And there is always that sense of anticipation at that moment to see if I have rendered the print without a blemish.
The preparation for my Anniversary print. I’m sorry, I can’t make a full reveal until after the Sydney Contemporary.
Being one of the artists to participate in The Baldessin Studio 25th Anniversary Print Collection meant that I was invited to produce an edition of 10 prints. I have donated my artist proof and editions 1-4 to Baldessin Studio. The artist proof will become part of the Baldessin Studio archive and will be displayed at the Sydney Contemporary, Australian Galleries Melbourne and other future Baldessin events. One of the prints will become part of a boxed set and offered to the State Library of Victoria for consideration for acquisition. Of course, the other prints will be for sale.
